Considered a direct competitor to Technic’s flagship  SL1200, which currently retails for over 1000, Audio Technica’s flagship LP1240 is a turntable that combines even greater functionality with equal durability and audio quality to match. The robust chassis comprises a diacast aluminium platter bolted to a heavy silicone base with ample rubber feet and has been meticulously crafted to absorb vibrations generated by the biggest, baddest and most brutal beats known to mankind, irrespective of your musical preferences.  It also houses one of the most powerful direct drive motors featured within any deck before or since, boasting a start-up torque rating of 4.5 kgf.cm and a maximum acceleration time of under one tenth of a second at 33rpm!  Amongst a plethora of practical features are a reverse play switch, two large start/stop buttons to allow for flexible orientation when used at live events or with a second deck, two torque dials to fine tune spin-up and brake times, an integrated phono stage which can be bypassed in favour of an external pre-amp if desired  and a USB digital output, which is extremely useful for archiving large collections of vinyl with high levels of dynamic variance where it might not be feasible to manually verify the loudest part of each disc in order to prevent distortion.   The 1240 also boasts an intuitive pitch lock or “Quartz” function, which ensures that playback speed remains unaltered even when the deck’s slider is operated. When this function is inactive, the same slider, combined with two “pitch” buttons situated underneath, provides the user with ranges of 8, 10, 20 and 50% over which to manipulate the playback speeds. This particular deck is about 6 months old but has been used exclusively in a home studio for archiving LPs hence it’s condition is excellent with no physical damage, chips, dents, scratches or excessive motor wear.  Supplied in original box with S shaped a tone arm and a head-shell.  No cartridge is included though an Ortofon OM Qbert would make an excellent choice for hard core scratchers while for more conventional listening, pretty much any mid-price offering (about 30-60) from such reputable brands as Ortofon, Goldring or Audio Technica would suffice.
