Please inspect the photos carefully.

This is a well used old fashioned PA amp and two speakers from the mid 1980s.  It is mono.  It glows green in the dark.  It does hiss a bit, not that you’d notice with the volume up. It looks a bit shabby. And it will absolutely obliterate any piece of all-in-one LED bouncing disco box that you might be tempted to pay 500 quid for, at Argos or Currys.

No joke.  Don’t waste your money, do a bit of research and then come back to this one.

If it says 5000 watts on the display then you can guarantee they are lying.  5000 watts drawn from the mains with a 100% efficient amplifier will need a 20 amp fuse, which means, theoretically, you won’t be able to plug it in to a regular socket.

This amp draws an honest 180 watts from the mains and dumps 100 watts of it into two super sensitive speakers, to give a fantastic fully rounded sound at wall-crumbling intensity.

These  amps were used by just about every gigging band and quite a few DJs in their heyday in the 1970s.

100 watts? yup that’s enough to do an average pub or club.  A real workhorse of an amp.

It has 5 channels each with dual inputs.  Channels have gain, treble and bass.  Over on the right there is the Master Volume control, Reverb, and Presence (high frequency sensitivity).

Round the back of the amp there are 4 further jack sockets for driving extra amps or hooking-up to an effects machine.

All sockets are 1/4 inch jack.

I will include a lead for connecting to a mini jack socket like what you find on an ipod.

The speakers in this package are 2-way passive units with 12 inch drivers.  The main woofers cover a wide range and are made by Celestion.  They have dual cones and do 80 watts each.  The tweeters are newly installed piezo units.

Even though they are a bit old the speakers sound great.  They aren’t in bad nick either.  Have ‘venue’ badges, which may be a VOX brand.

The amp has recently been serviced.  It is working quite nicely but does have a bit of hiss with the volume up and idling without a signal going through.  This can probably be expected for an amp this age.

The amp has just celebrated it’s 40th birthday.  It was made in February 1977, right in the middle of punk rock.

It may well have be owned by a punk rock group too.  It looks a bit punk itself with all it’s nicks and scratches in the enclosure.  But don’t mind that.  It’s a good sign that reflects on the gear.  This is the good stuff that got that way because it got used a lot.

Want to give it a new lease of life?  starting bids at just 99 pence.

Some things to note:

The controls all work OK but I noticed tonight that the ‘presence’ control has a bit of crackle when you turn it.  That could probably be sorted out with a quick spray of servisol.

The amp has a spring reverb, which starts sounding slightly artificial if the control is turned too far up.  Just keep it at a relaxed setting and you should be OK.

The main power transistors have been replaced with modern flat-mounting equivalents that can handle higher voltages and disperse the heat better.  I had to do this because the genuine tin can transistor parts have been unavailable for 20 years.  Also I wanted to see if it was possible…. and it was.  For the technically minded the original part was 2N3773HG and I replaced them with MJL21196G.

The jack sockets all work but some modern-made leads might not fit quite right.  You will know if you have a dud connection when the signal doesn’t go through and you get a whistling noise instead.  A lot of cables and leads originate from China these days where they haven’t heard of feet and inches, let alone 1/4 inches.  Invest in decent leads and you should be OK.

The best way to connect-up a stereo player to this amp is to separate left and right into different channels.  They will be mixed down to mono by the amp.  You have more control sending left and right into 2 channels than you would by putting them both into one channel using both of it’s jack inputs at once.

Oh and don’t worry that it’s a mono amp.  Stereo is pretty pointless in a room packed with people who might only be close to one speaker.

And I think that’s it.
If there is anything on the item you are unsure about then email me and I will try my best to give an answer.
Best to email before the last day of the auction.  I tend to do my ebay stuff later in the evening after work, so you might not get an immediate reply to questions.
If anyone wants to come and inspect the item before placing a bid then email me in good time and I will try to arrange something.
Postage rate to a UK mainland destination is 40.  Further afield eg Scottish Highlands or anywhere over the water will be more expensive – email me with your postcode for a quote.
Please be patient if you want it delivered.  It’s 3 large boxes for me to pack and take to the courier depot.  Quite a bit of effort.
Payment by Paypal or cash on collection.
Inspection before bidding is recommended as I don’t do returns on this one.
Please read the description carefully and take time to study the photos.  I try to be accurate in my description and make a note of any issues, so take a look and be sure you want the item before placing a bid.  I can say for definite that I am one of the few people on ebay who bother to do this.  From my own experience as a buyer I can say that the vast majority of items I have bought from ebay have had something or other wrong with them and the seller has not mentioned this in the listing.  Sometimes the faults are serious.  If there is some issue on the item above then I would have found it and pointed it out.  Though I think if we are talking about the odd bit of wear and tear, then it’s fair to judge that alongside the age of the item, and what can be expected.  So do take a look at the photos, if I am saying something like ‘general wear and tear for it’s age’.
Most of the items I sell were at one time costly to buy new.  A lot of it is real cool stuff and still in demand in the right places.  However, I have a family and a job working long hours, and I don’t have the time to go off and bring these treasures to the right market place.  I just sell them on ebay hoping that they will find a good home and I could recoup some money to help with the bills each month.
However, there are people out there who are just not satisfied with what they’ve got.  I really don’t want to have to deal with returns, so be absolutely sure that the item above is something you definitely want to own.  And if it’s something like an amplifier by the Acoustic Control Corporation that cost $900 in 1978, and you got it off me for 40 quid, then I will think you are an absolute mug if you start emailing me and saying you changed your mind.  And you will probably end up in my banned list.
I am slowly getting rid of things that I had stored in a studio space that I had up until two years ago.  I make sure they are in good working condition before I let them go, and when I have put some effort into restoring them I don’t want to find out that they have been bust by the buyer.  So be sure you know how to use the thing before plugging it in.
