For collectors of shellac or acoustic records, half speed LPs, and those blessed (or cursed) with perfect pitch and find the need to play records a percent or two from the nominal speed, here is an opportunity to aquire a unique (almost) Technics SL-1200 Mk2 professional turntable in very good condition, modified by Geoff Duboff of Diapason to allow it to run at any speed between 15 and 120 RPM, as well as the normal fixed speeds 33 and 45 RPM.
Normal or vari speed mode is selected by a switch on the vari speed controller panel. When in usual 33 – 45 mode, the appropriate speed selctor button lights up, and the strobe light comes on, illuminating the speed strobe on the turntable as normal, whilst the vari speed indicator display remains blank.
In the vari mode, neither strobe or speed buttons light, but speed is indiated in one tenth RPM steps on a four digit display readout. In this mode, although indicated speed is only in one tenth RPM steps, speed is actually infinitely variable between 15 and 120 RPM.
