Taper: Different markings for different parts of the world

With Log or what is described as Audio taper the volume does not change in a linear maner as you move the fader – but the human ear does not hear volume change in a linear manor (but rather a logarithmic way) so this is best suited for volume controls and is more natural – seems easy to adjust at lower levels and is only much louder near the top end
Linear and is often used for tone controls but saying that many people seem to prefer or Audio taper for this also as it can be a preference. At mid point a linear pot is at half resistance but to the human ear this does not correspond to half volume as I hope is clear from above.
Log or Audio taper is often used for Volume or Stereo output levels for final output level – but read below also
Needless to say both will function OK and in some cases it’s just a matter of opinion, or argument shall we say in some cases and also what your used to. Some people specifically use the opposite on replacement units because it’s what they like – this is particularly true for Guitarists.
