Art Deco Style UV Wall Light Sculpture This has to be one of the more unusual items you will find for sale! This very large UV illuminated wall sculpture is thought to have been commissioned in the 1980s to form part of an art installation. The company who produced this piece didn’t go on to place them into production – so this could well be the only example in existence! The condition of this unique piece is generally good. It does have some scuffs & dings commensurate with age – however it is quite presentable.
It comprises a rigid polymer box frame measuring a sizeable 39 inches high by 36 inches wide from the front which tapers inward to the rear with dimensions of 36 inches x 32 inches. The frame is open-fronted and projects around 6 inches when hung on a wall. There are four mounting keyholes formed into the rear of the frame. Although large in size it is reasonably light in weight at around 10Kg. The image itself is formed from fluorescing plastic tubing mounted onto an opaque perspex panel. It depicts a quintessential 1920s shingle-bobbed ‘flapper’ sporting a smoking cigarette in its requisite holder. Recessed into the top & bottom of the frame are two ultraviolet BLB (blacklight blue) tube lights which are mounted into polished aluminium reflectors. When powered up these excite the image into a state of light blue & red fluorescence – bringing this striking & rather lovely lady to life! The effect when lit in a darkened room is most alluring!
The original ballasts were well past their best so they were replaced with a pair of new Philips ballasts along with matching new Philips 2ft (600mm) BLB tubes. These ballasts incorporate advanced electronics which extend the life of the tubes by way of warm-starting. The Philips BLB tubes have an output peaking around 365nm – perfect for exciting luminescence in fluorescing materials.
A 5 metre power cable enters through the top left side of the frame and fuse protection is provided alongside. A power switch is located to the underside of the frame for easy access when the piece is wall mounted. The original tubes are included in addition to two new Philips tubes so four tubes in total.
Due to the size & nature of this piece it is being offered for collection only. It is located in the Wolstanton area of Newcastle Under Lyme in Staffordshire. DISCLAIMER: Although this unit is seen as functioning in the photos – it must be inspected & tested for safety by the relevant qualified authorities prior to use. In light of this and given this is a prototype unit with no documentation I am selling it as a non-functioning item only. With this in mind the plug will be fitted with a plug-protector which will be cable tied and fitted with a warning label rendering the unit inoperable. The onus for any injury, loss or damage as a result of powering this unit up will lie with whosoever chooses to remove the plug-protector / warning label & subsequently applies power to the unit. The unit passed an independent PAT (portable appliance test) on 21/12/2016.
