5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent speakerBy David p on 4 September 2009I’ve had a pair of M-Audio Studiophile AV40 speakers for almost a year now and not once have I regretted the purchase.
I bought these to replace a pair of Creative Gigaworks T20 speakers as I couldn’t live with the poor accuracy, lack of clarity and tonal colouring. Plenty of people praise the T20s sound, but trust me they are not good!
The AV40s are heads above all of the multi-media speaker companies, but that doesn’t surprise me as these are essentially entry level active studio monitors, not just speakers! As such they are far more detailed and accurate in their sound, in fact listening to tracks I’ve edited on the creative T20s is just plain embarrassing as faults I could not hear before are readily apparent.
As for volume, there’s plenty, in fact perhaps too much if you are using them in the same location as you would multi-media speakers (my AV40s have never used more than 1/3 of what they can deal up). So if you are planning to use them in this way then the AV40s little brothers, the AV20s are probably better fit.
As for criticisms, the isolation from the desk could be better, but that easy enough to solve with 4 squash balls cut in half. Other than that certain harmonic piano frequencies can cause the grill to buzz, but that’s the only real sonic fault to mention at this price point.17 of 18 people found the following review helpful5.0 out of 5 starsSmall yet amazingBy Matt Boz on 22 October 2010I had been looking for some speakers for my mixing session’s at home, and had read various reviews about these speakers online. Alot of the reviews mentioned the fact that the speakers get hot when in use, and yes they do but only the speaker which has the built in amplifier and I would not say it get’s hot just warm as you would expect with an amplifier. Other reviews also mention a humming noise when they are switched on but again this is due to the internal amplifier and this goes away when you are playing music back through the speakers, and when you switch them off.
I can not fault these speakers at all, they have helped improve my mixing through the sound quality they give out and I have not even had to have them turned up to full volume, I’m currently using them on around a quarter volume and adjust the gains on my mixer accordingly. Yes they are more expensive than some other speakers that are out there but I always go with the idea of if you want quality then you need to pay for it.
5.0 out of 5 starsM-Audio AV40 -Professional budget studio Monitors and PC speakers of 2014!By Ronnie on 28 February 2014Out of the box, pure beauty. A choice between a standard unbalanced RCA line connection or 1/4″ TRS connection to plug into your media device.
A speaker wire is included to join the stereo sound together. This is colour coded and is easy to connect by inserting only the metal ends inside.
I personally use these monitors to plug into my DAW using a RCA cable into the line connection option and they deliver an extremely dreamy balanced sound with no annoying low end bass. At 85Hz-20kHz, the frequency response is good enough to record professionally and more than good enough for PC speakers.
I didn’t buy this product from Amazon but I paid the same price from Maplins and I am very happy with them, so much so that I decided to review them on Amazon!
5/5 ~ One of the best purchases I’ve made. Even though I do love these speakers for the price, if you are planning to use these for recording, just be warned that because the bass response is limited at 85Hz, when you transfer your music to other media devices that can support a frequency range below this aforementioned frequency, your track might sound a bit bassy and or muddy so I would advise you to purchase a good pair of headphones so that you can really monitor these hidden frequencies. I use the Sennheiser HD 598 High-End Open Circumaural Headphones which is a better reference for mixing and monitoring your frequencies in a recording/mixing session.

Wow! The speakers are awesome! Prior to buying these i was looking for some studio monitor speakers for my Mac. I looked around and stumbled across these that had so many great reviews. Now i have these i must say that they live to the hype. Amazing sound quality. The bass is punchy and strong but not overpowering which really kicks in among bass heavy tracks. The mids and highs are superb and clear. Overall i cannot recommend these highly enough. Go buy it!

Absolutely ear-opening.
If you are used to regular computer or low-end bookshelf speakers, these active speakers will blow your mind. If you are used to mid-range audiophile speakers, these will blow your mind even more.
Built-in amp balanced active speakers are generally a bit crap or only ‘really’ good when paired with a real sub-woofer. Not these. These take your music collection, your videos, your video-calling, and learn what fidelity really is. I’ve had some vastly more expensive speakers driven by vastly more expensive amps that don’t have this resolution.
Nothing at this price range up to double or triple compares. Ignore any stupidity about them being a bit big or a little awkward or unsightly with the blue light in front.
Here’s the test to prove it: Get Donny Hathaway’s “I believe to my soul”. Listen on your current speakers for the separation between the electric bass and paired trombones. Then try the M40s. Most speakers muddy this combination, but the M40s bring out the slightly delayed brass attack and final ‘wah’ while still letting through the plummy electric bass note.
Just get them and change your listening life.

I’m not sure if I can call myself a ‘musician’ (and definitely not an audio engineer), but I like to play and record as a hobby. Therefore, I didn’t want to spend much on my ‘home studio’ and tried to research for the best value for money in the ‘budget’ equipment range.
I use this monitor with my macbook pro (I use Logic Pro X to record), and found it very good in giving me the right sound to play songs in different devices/speakers/phones (with is the main purpose of the ‘flat’ sound of a monitor). Before using this monitor it was nearly impossible to get the resulting audio right (i.e. some songs sounded amazing on my earphones, but awful on my bluetooth and laptop speakers). Now I really understand the importance of having a proper monitor to help with the audio mixing.
As my ears are not well educated as an audio engineer would be, I couldn’t see much difference with the ones that I’ve used in proper recording studios. Therefore I’m giving 5 stars based on meeting my sound expectations, price, built quality, look (yes, I want my home studio to look good!), connectivity, easy to use and versatility (as it can be used as excellent speakers).
